Poetry Writing in EFL Classrooms: Learning from Indonesian Students’ Strategies

Hanuer’s Meaningful Literacy has been used as a major justification for including poetry writing part of pedagogical practices in second and foreign language contexts. Unfortunately, within the EFL context, many teachers are still reluctant to include their teaching due common assumption that poems is too difficult students deal with therefore will be out reach interest. This qualitative study, which collected data through observations, documentation surveys, investigated how 171 Indonesian successfully write books creative classes. Employing an ethnographic case study approach, findings showed use following strategies English poems: (1) Using popular poem templates idea starters; (2) Creating vocabulary bank rhyming poems; (3) Building emotions personal story sharing later channeling them writing. concludes could enjoy expressive pedagogy thus, debunks negative related students’ lack interest appreciation writing.
